The first consultation with a neurologist is often one of the most important

This consultation allows the neurologist to learn more about you and explore the symptoms you are experiencing and how these are affecting your life.

The appointment is predominantly about

  1. gathering information on the symptoms/ events you are experiencing

  2. performing a physical examination

  3. reviewing any tests (including imaging/ MRIs) that you have had

It is highly valuable that you bring along any information that may be useful. Some examples of helpful things are

  • lists of symptoms that you are experiencing

  • descriptions by family members and/or video recordings of events you have had

  • diaries/dates of symptoms or certain events.

If in doubt, bring it along.

One of the most important tests for neurologists are MRI scans

If you have not had any tests – do not worry – your neurologist will likely arrange these after your initial consultation. If you have had an MRI before, it is valuable if you bring either a physical or electronic copy (on CD or USB) of the pictures along with you.

MRI reports are valuable, but having the actual pictures is even better. Having the pictures allows the neurologist to assess the type of MRI you have had and look at parts of the brain that may be affected based on your provided history. Most importantly, in bringing along the actual pictures, the neurologist can go through these with you in a clear and easy to understand manner, so you become familiar with and start to gain understanding of the conditions we discuss.

We set aside one hour for your initial consultation, to ensure we allow for a full and detailed consultation experience. During this time, we will also discuss the next steps involved in your care, as well as arrange to review the recommended tests/interventions at a follow-up appointment.
